LO(NG WALK I was feeling pretty tired When I stepped down from the train Thought my feet would never stand upon That piece of earth again Now I'm feeling so peculiar I can hardly get my breath I know exactly where I'm going There's just one journey left And though my mind takes a long walk Way out of sight I thank the Lord my body's still alright There's no lights on in the houses Though it helps to see the stars There's no traffic going my way No petrol for the cars Someone's taken down the signposts Though I still know my way home I know every field and farmhouse Every turning in the road And though my mind takes a long walk Way out of sight I thank the Lord my body's still alright And will my loved ones recognize me It's been so long They had to build a life without me I been gone I was feeling pretty tired When I stepped down from the train Thought my feet would never stand upon That piece of earth again Now I'm feeling so peculiar I can hardly get my breath I know exactly where I'm going There's just a few yards left Just a few yards left

about

"The new album by Leicestershire’s Chris Mills aka C-Beem is called Jammin’ The Steam Towers' and offers ten tracks. Chris is never predictable and once again he shifts between his trademark sophisticated Synthpop style and other strands that dip into Psychedelia, Alt Pop and an underlying Funk sensibility as witnessed on opening track Peekaboo with shades of Cabaret Voltaire and 23 Skidoo in the quasi-industrial electro-groove, spoken word samples and slightly shouty vocals. But then we also get smooth horns and some jazzy Rhodes later in the track too. The industrial funk certainly remains present through the next couple of tracks before Starships adds some guitar jangle and a Bowie-esque octave-apart vocal melody.
Without Love, Nothing Is Real changes the mood and tone with bright keyboard and a lo-fi vocal production although the melody has echoes of Green Gartside-Strohmeyer of Scritti Politti. Warriors is slow and laid back with a mildly anthemic feel. Then comes the title track Jammin’ The Steam Towers. The accompanying synth waves have a watery feel but also act like a drone, holding the foundations in place while synths and guitars veer off in different directions against that constant root bass. Chris’s vocals on this track remind me a little of Neil Arthur in a mash with Jim Kerr while Nation of Language throw in spices. But the sound is intriguingly individual and, like all his songs, it is strong on melody and imagination. Ambient Synth Pop.
The album ends with the new single Babel, again underlining Chris’s versatility, a big driving piano melody playing over New Order-ish chords before giving way to verses that are a little like Bowie in a mash with Keane. The song is carried along by the momentum of its infectious melody and dynamic contrasts. A smart and strong finish to an imaginative, unpredictable and lovingly crafted album."
Neil March, Trust The Doc blog

"Rock At Night had previously the opportunity to talk to electronic boy extraordinaire Chris Mills, aka C-Beem, and now we have his latest album ‘Jammin’ The Steam Towers’ in front of us. Mills himself could not be labeled as a musical ‘spring chicken,’ and that experience truly shows here. It seems that in his role as C-Beem, Mills has gathered all the positives he could pick up from all forms of electro-pop, at no point neglecting all the elements that make good electro-pop – great melody, excellent beats, electronic base for the sound that at no point overpowers the song itself, and well, danceability. Mills adds here another element that might not seem essential but does make his music stand out – some substantial lyrics that go beyond mundane.
Mills himself describes the album as “a chocolate box assortment of music delights, not as conceptually tight as previous albums, but held together somehow by an art-rock, synth-pop vibe.“
And yes, C-Beem’s chocolate box has the necessary wide assortment of (electro) flavors, something anybody can desire from a good chocolate box. Great for the dancefloor, open window car ride, fitness runs… whatever."
Rock At Night magazine

" 'Jammin' The Steam Towers' is the new album by the talented C-beem, there are 10 songs from his career that form a sensational and lively album, a sequence of absurdly good songs.
The first track is 'Peekaboo', a collaboration with The Fantom Man, a delicious electronic rock, with characteristics of the 90's and the 80's, bringing synthesizers well placed, sophisticated and full of energy, a song that is alive and full of attitude, has beats that make us transcend, C-beem rocks this song.
'Under The Gun' is the next song, this time the partnership is with Lochie Brooks, the sounds that are C-beem's face are in the track, it's impossible to say that this song is not C-beem's, it has the artist's face and brings the eighties electro rock to the fore again, a complete song, with those synthesizer arrangements that we love and that are the artist's strong point, this song has mystery, it has intensity and it is authentic, C-Beem is a great genius.
'Toad of Toad Hall' is so light, fresh and full of life, a dynamic track, high spirits, c-beem's synthesizers bring innovation to the song and manage to deliver pep to music that is pure and special, a bright, colorful pop rock electropop and that brings joy to the listener. I want to listen to this song all the time. These tracks are not a partnership.
'Starships' is our favorite, so light and fun, able to lift our spirits, with an absolutely positive and incredible energy, this song brings us power, makes us feel alive, is a futuristic trip and manages to reach us, warms our heart and makes us float our mind, sensational.
'Without Love Nothing Is Real' is refined, light, romantic and beautiful, music that moves the listener, draws attention to the lyrics and has life, a song full of emotion.
'Warriors' is pure harmony, intelligent and authentic sounds make up a song that provides us with a journey through sound waves, is expressive in its notes and brings us a true encounter with ourselves. Intimate and energetic music.
Then comes the song that names the album, so beautiful, powerful, structured and special, a track that has power and originality, spectacular.
The rest of the album is fantastic and deserves to be listened to very carefully, these songs are true works of art, and without bad spoilers you need to know the rest of the album."

EDM Rekords Music Reviews

"C-Beem’s newest album is an explorative, varied journey of emotions, styles, and sounds that retain a trademark retro-synth sound that binds the experience together into a cohesive and entertaining listening experience.
C-Beem is the moniker for Chris Mills, a Leicester City-based producer, and composer whose infatuation lies with vintage synth sounds from the 80s and 90s, of which we find loads in his latest album, titled Jammin’ The Steam Towers. At parts political, at parts adventurous, fantastical, and even humorous, the album is a trip that rewards multiple listens.
The promising start of the album with Peekaboo is unforgettable. The swagger, charismatic, yelled vocals bring a Bowie-like confidence that made the 80s-inspired retro synths sound just right. The driving and groovy piece is disco-conscious and infectious, multi-faceted, and loaded with a terrific keyboard solo that’s soulful and beautifully breaks the hectic pace with the help of acid jazz. From the experimental and brooding darkness of the following cut, Under the Gun, and its memorable, rhythmic howls, onto the playful and bright synth-pop offering of Toad Hall. With a spoken, fantastical story, this fusion brought to mind M83’s touching “Raconte-moi une histoire”, another song that’s also coincidentally about a frog.
Without Love Nothing Is Real brings to the table a hint of Phil Collins and his memorable and catchy hooks, delivered here in the form of lines that repeat on the piano and a modulated guitar in this modal-sounding composition, and along with the vocals, the output is a charismatic and adventurous piece that defines a more accessible sound on this album. The heartfelt Warriors is next in line. Based on a soulful acoustic guitar part, this sweet and triumphant-sounding piece brings to mind some of Michael Jackson’s humanitarian songs with their empowering arrangements and simple compositions, and touching lyrics; Heal the World is an example.
The title song is a grand and progressive piece that rewards multiple listens. The retro-sounding synths are industrial and foreboding, and the distorted guitars introduce a brand-new color to the album. The album ends with another memorable piece of music, Babel. The song’s stirring melodies, interesting drum timbres, and touching composition all serve to make Babel a warm closer to bookend an album that varies greatly in concept and in execution.
C-eem’s latest album excels on multiple fronts, and chief among those is its effortless variety. Each song easily stands on its own, but bringing them together serves to add an element of cohesion that helps most songs, but doesn’t fair that well on a few others that end up suffering from issues in pacing or a mix that just sounds too removed from its surroundings, and the excellent single Starships is one of those. Regardless, Jammin’ the Steam Towers is interesting to listen to, and that should not slip under the radar of lovers of Electronica and Synthpop."
Moataz Gwaily, Sistra Reviews

"And so, here we are, anticipating the British talent’s upcoming record, a full-length release titled ‘Jammin The Steam Towers’.
The album is set to contain 10 original tracks, all exploring the artistic universe around C-Beem’s majestic and complex musical prowess. In it, the listener will find everything that makes the project a rare find: a culturally informed sound, the best electronic tradition, and refined songwriting. Balanced between art-pop, 70s synth-pop and psychedelic tones, ‘Jammin The Steam Towers’ really hit the mark. Our personal favourite must be ‘Toad of Toad Hall’, a song that truly mirrors the glorious era of ‘Synth Britannia’."
